The Nesbit technique is the most commonly used method in surgery to treat penile curvature. This technique will reduce the longer side of the penis by excising ellipses and plications that align the member. Check out the pros and cons.
Men with penile curvature have probably heard of the Nesbit technique as one of the options to mitigate the impacts that deformities in the penis can have on sexual life and mental health.
The Nesbit technique for correcting penile curvature can be a treatment for Peyronie’s disease – when the curvature is acquired over life – or for congenital cases – that is, when the patient is born with some degree of deviation.
How the diagnosis of curvature is made
To identify cases of Peyronie’s Disease or congenital curvature, it is essential that men consult a urologist.
The doctor will help differentiate the conditions based on the patient’s report:
- If the penis has been curved since young, it is a likely case of congenital curvature.
- If the penis started curving in adult life, especially after the age of 40, and also shows size reduction, thinning, and erectile dysfunction, it could be Peyronie’s Disease.
- If the penis has been curved since young, but in adult life became increasingly curved, the patient may have a combination of both conditions.
It is also very important to perform physical and imaging examinations to find out if there are fibroses, what the rigidity and vascularization inside the member are like. From there, the doctor and patient can make the best decisions.
When surgical intervention is requested
Surgery to correct penile curvature should only be indicated for patients who are facing difficulties in their sexual life, such as erectile dysfunction or penis slipping during penetration, and who have tried treatment with medications or injections but did not have a satisfactory response.
There are patients who, even with the curvature, with some adaptations and care, have a quality sex life. In these cases, follow-up with the urologist is essential, but surgery
may be unnecessary or postponed.
Discover the Nesbit Technique: an option for treating Peyronie and young curvature
In 1965, the urologist, surgeon, and professor Reed Miller Nesbit was a pioneer in describing the technique for correcting penile curvature. Not by chance, the Nesbit technique bears his name.
To understand what the Nesbit technique is, it is necessary to keep in mind that its goal is to equalize all sides of the penis.
This is done through an intervention on the long side – that is, the side that was not affected by the curvature.
The surgery occurs in the tunica albuginea, a fibrous tissue that surrounds the corpora cavernosa. In this region, excisions are made that shorten the tissue and, at the same time, align the long side with the short side.
The disadvantage is that, when finished, the penis will be reduced in size. It will be, more or less, the size at which the side affected by the curvature is located. In more severe degrees, this reduction can reach up to 5 centimeters.
Moreover, the thread used for the suture remains permanently inside the penis. It can break, which may cause the curvature to return, and some men feel a certain discomfort due to the presence of surgical stitches.
How long does recovery from Nesbit surgery take?
For the patient to fully recover from the surgery, with the end of healing and results, it is necessary to wait between six months and one year.
However, long before that, it is already possible to notice changes and perform everyday activities.
Expected Results
With the Nesbit technique, the patient can expect a penis aligned, as much as possible, after all, it is not always possible to perfectly align the member.
The man should also be prepared to live with a penis smaller than he was used to, since the removal of tissue will decrease the size of the penis.
Additionally, there is a possibility of recurrence of penile curvature. That is, even after surgery, which is performed on the longer side of the penis to align it, there are no guarantees that the curvature will not reappear elsewhere.
Specifically, the Nesbit procedure does not prevent future occurrences of curvature, nor does it prevent thinning or reduction in penis size.
Postoperative Care
The first days will require care to avoid swelling and bruising in the operated area. If there is pain and discomfort, the patient can take analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed by the doctor.
In the first weeks, it is necessary to avoid intense physical activities. Men who do not exert themselves in the
work environment can return to their professions during this period.
With one or two months after surgery, it will be possible to resume sexual life.
Throughout the postoperative process, it is essential that the man be periodically monitored by the urologist to ensure full recovery.
Are there contraindications to the technique?
Although it remains the most common technique in Brazil, the Nesbit procedure is no longer the most recommended for treating penile curvature.
There are now surgical strategies consolidated by the global medical community that align the penis and, at the same time, treat other problems, such as loss of caliber and erectile dysfunction, without a significant reduction in penile size and with lower chances of the curvature returning.
It is worth remembering, still, that any surgery for the treatment of Peyronie’s Disease or congenital curvature is only indicated when there are no clinical alternatives for the patient, and that he must perform prior exams that will help understand if the procedure will truly bring benefits to the patient.
The Nesbit technique has opened the doors to treating penile curvatures. Although it is still useful in certain cases, from it, the urological area has evolved and brought innovations so that patients who present these conditions recover their sexual health.
