What Is the Egydio Technique and What Are Its Benefits?

Browse the content

The Egydio Technique aims to promote controlled expansion of penile tissues, seeking the greatest use of anatomical potential while respecting the structural limits imposed by nerves, blood vessels, and the urethra.

The Egydio Technique was developed by Dr. Paulo Egydio and was described with the purpose of prioritizing functional and aesthetic aspects, according to indication and individual evaluation.

This is based on the use of incisions planned through geometric principles, which may favor tissue relaxation/expansion in selected cases, with the goal of preserving neurovascular structures.

What Is the Egydio Technique?

The Egydio Technique resulted from Dr. Paulo Egydio’s doctoral research.

The work contributed to discussion and refinement of existing surgical approaches for penile curvature by applying geometric principles to incision planning.

Its key differentiator is the use of geometric principles to help estimate the location and extent of the incisions needed, according to anatomy and the type of deformity.

This approach eliminates the need for grafts in nearly all cases, or when grafts are needed, it may allow them to be smaller.

In certain scenarios, the technique may avoid plication. It is important to remember that, depending on the technique used and the case, some approaches may be associated with shortening.

With these characteristics, the goal of the Egydio Technique is to improve sexual function and correct the deformity, seeking to expand length up to the anatomical limit possible. Results vary from case to case.

When Is the Egydio Technique Indicated?

Learn about the indications for the Egydio Technique:

  • Peyronie’s disease with complex curvature.
  • Severe erectile dysfunction with penile shortening.
  • Penile prosthesis implant or replacement.

Benefits of the Egydio Technique for Peyronie’s Disease

According to an article published by the Cleveland Clinic, Peyronie’s disease and congenital curvature affect between 6% and 10% of men aged 40 to 70.

Correction of this condition is surgical, and in most cases the Egydio Technique makes penile reconstruction without grafts possible—meaning it does not require tissue from other parts of the body.

In the surgical treatment of Peyronie’s disease with the Egydio Technique, geometric principles are used to perform incisions planned at points defined by intraoperative assessment and the type of deformity.

This method may contribute to deformity correction and to adjusting length/girth in selected cases, with an emphasis on reducing risks and preserving neurovascular structures—as with any surgery, there are risks that must be discussed.

Benefits for Congenital Curvature

Congenital curvature is a condition present from birth that usually becomes noticeable during adolescence, when boys begin to have erections.

This type of curvature may also be treated surgically with the Egydio Technique in selected cases. The shorter side is lengthened as much as possible, because sometimes the nerve does not allow maximum extension.

Benefits for Penile Prosthesis Implant

Severe erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, and cardiovascular disease can compromise penile function, and the latter two may also affect penile anatomy.

The advantages of the Egydio Technique include penile reconstruction without grafts and with precise incisions, which enables selection of the most appropriate prosthesis.

In some clinical contexts, an approach with smaller incisions may be considered, and infection prevention involves multiple factors (technique, prophylactic antibiotics, postoperative care, and patient profile).

What Can Happen in Surgeries Without the Egydio Technique

There are different surgical techniques for correcting penile curvature. The choice depends on the type of deformity, disease phase, presence of erectile dysfunction, and the patient’s goals.

Results and satisfaction vary according to the technique chosen, the surgeon’s experience, anatomy, and expectations. Therefore, the decision must be individualized.

Depending on the technique used and the clinical scenario, there may be a perception of shortening and, in some cases, an association with erectile dysfunction. These risks should be discussed during the consultation.
