Is a sexual stimulant part of your routine at the crucial moment? If yes, are you being monitored by a doctor? If not, be warned: you may be putting your health at risk.

The interest in erectile dysfunction drugs, popularly used as sexual stimulants to enhance performance at the crucial moment, is on the rise.

In the first half of 2023, Sildenafil Citrate was the most sold medication over the Internet in the country, according to a survey by Consulta Remédios, which gathers data from over two thousand pharmacies. Tadalafil was in third place.

When such medication is used under medical prescription, it can indeed bring benefits for men. However, indiscriminate use can be harmful, and that is what we will discuss in today’s blog.

The Reality of the Sexual Stimulant

When we talk about pharmacological sexual stimulants, we are mostly referring to medications like Sildenafil and Tadalafil.

Both are indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate erectile dysfunction.

These drugs act as inhibitors of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5), which is related to cellular signal transmission.

These medications help improve erectile function, as they increase blood flow in the smooth muscle cells of the arteries and the corpora cavernosa of the penis in response to sexual stimulation.

The difference between them is that Sildenafil has a shorter duration in the body, between 4-6 hours, while Tadalafil can last for a more extended period, up to 36 hours, requiring lower and less frequent doses.

Side Effects of Sexual Stimulants

Sexual stimulants like Sildenafil and Tadalafil have usage indications for erectile dysfunction and are approved for marketing by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) in the country. This means they are safe medications.

However, even so, there are side effects, as with any medication. The most common are:

  • Headache
  • Back and muscle pain
  • Facial flushing
  • Temporary vision changes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Gastrointestinal disorders

There is another less common but potentially more severe side effect for men: priapism.

Priapism is a case of prolonged erection, lasting more than 3 hours, causing pain. It is a medical emergency and, if not treated immediately, can lead to tissue death and permanent erectile dysfunction.

Additionally, another danger of a sexual stimulant is its interaction with other medications.

Patients using nitrates and/or alpha-blockers, for treating heart problems and hypertension, for example, may experience a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Long-Term Health Risks

The sexual stimulant is considered safe when used according to instructions and medical prescription.

However, when used indiscriminately and over long periods without professional supervision, they can pose health risks.

The more a man uses, the more likely he is to encounter one of the unwanted side effects of the medication, including priapism.

In some cases, a man may develop resistance to these stimulants. Thus, he will need increasingly larger doses to achieve the same effect at the crucial moment, heightening the risks.

Moreover, prolonged use can create emotional dependence, to the point that even a man may develop erectile dysfunction of a psychological cause – a condition that is treated by combining the assistance of a urologist and a sexologist.
