Malleable or semi rigid penile prosthesis

Penile prosthesis implantation is one of the existing methods to solve Erectile Dysfunction. But it is important to know that there are different models, and choosing the ideal implant can be confusing.

For this reason, I decided to make a series of 3 blogs about the different types of penile prosthesis. In this publication we will talk specifically about malleable (or semi-rigid) prosthesis. At the end of this blog, you will know the different sizes and calibers of each of these models.

What is a penile prosthesis for?

The penis is a hydraulic column that, in order to have an erection and penetration resistance, needs to generate enough pressure within the cavernous bodies to allow it to have vertical rigidity. When the penis cannot generate this pressure naturally, it may need a complement of axial rigidity with the penile prosthesis implant.

This means that the penile prosthesis is indicated to offer structural reinforcement to the penis, allowing it to have rigidity and resistance for satisfactory penetration.

I wrote a blog on how you can tell if you need an implant, which you can access by clicking here.

Malleable or semi-rigid penile prosthesis

The malleable prosthesis, also known as semi-rigid, keeps the patient’s penis elongated, in addition to its malleability allowing it to be accommodated normally inside the underwear.

The two shafts – silver filaments wrapped in silicone – make the penis malleable and allow it to be gently accommodated downwards or to the sides (groin). At the moment of sex, just put it in position and you are ready to start intercourse.

There are different sizes, models and thicknesses of penile prosthesis, and the choice of implant must respect the particularities of the anatomy of each patient.

If the penis is shortened and thinned as a result of fibrosis inside it, it might be necessary to place an implant that is smaller and thinner than the ideal. Therefore, placing a prosthesis larger than the patient’s penis will not be possible.

These are the main characteristics of the malleable, flexible or semi-rigid prosthesis, which also has the advantage of not having liquid leaks, not stopping suddenly, in addition to having a low need for replacement, especially when compared to inflatable (or hydraulic) models.

Does the penile prosthesis enlarge and thicken the penis?

It is not the function of the penile prosthesis to enlarge or thicken the penis. As stated earlier, its purpose is to give the organ vertical firmness so that it does not bend during penetration.

What can solve the decrease in size and thinning of the penis is penile reconstruction through the Egydio Technique, with vertical incisions, to provide greater caliber, and horizontal incisions to ensure greater size of the nerves within the limits of science.

If the penile reconstruction is not performed in the surgical implant process, it will not be possible to place the largest size of penile prosthesis. This can result in patient dissatisfaction.

Below you will find the first of three videos where I talk about penile prosthesis models. In it, you will see the malleable models that we talk about in this blog.
