Penile-dermatitis is a penile skin lesion that can be caused by irritant or allergenic substances. Condom latex is the most well-known agent, but other products can also irritate the skin. Check it out.

What Is Penile-Dermatitis?

Penile-dermatitis is the irritation of the penis skin caused by contact with irritant or allergenic substances.

Irritant substances, such as sodium lauryl sulfate found in soaps, cause immediate reactions on the skin, eyes, or respiratory tract due to their irritating potential.

Meanwhile, allergenic substances like the latex used in condoms can cause redness and itching, symptoms that are an immune response to the proteins in the rubber.

Differences Between Contact Penile-Dermatitis and Other Skin Conditions

Contact dermatitis in the male genital area is an inflammation of the penis skin caused by exposure to irritant or allergenic substances. However, penile-dermatitis can resemble other skin diseases. Learn the differences:

1. Penile Fungal Infections

Candidiasis is an example of a skin infection that can affect the penis. It results from the excessive proliferation of the fungus Candida albicans, which is present in the intimate area.

Symptoms include intense itching, unpleasant odor, redness and swelling of the glans, cracks, a white discharge resembling curdled milk, and pain or burning during intercourse.

Preventing penile fungal infections, such as candidiasis, involves cleaning the penis daily, drying it thoroughly to avoid moisture, wearing cotton underwear, and using condoms.

2. Genital Psoriasis

Genital psoriasis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system causes skin cells to multiply uncontrollably. This abnormal growth leads to reddish patches shaped like plaques, intense itching, dryness, and pain, usually on the glans.

Daily intimate hygiene, cotton underwear, and similar steps can help provide comfort in cases of genital psoriasis.

3. Atopic Eczema

Atopic eczema can affect the skin of any part of the body.

Its causes stem from an overreaction of the immune system to certain substances. Specifically, eczema on the penis can be triggered by lubricants that delay orgasm and by condom latex. Symptoms include itching, dryness, crusts, and swelling.

Treatment for eczema includes topical medications and products formulated for sensitive skin, prescribed by a doctor.

How Can Penile-Dermatitis Affect Sexual Health?

The impact of penile-dermatitis on sexual life arises because intimacy may need to be postponed—condom latex can aggravate symptoms like itching and redness.

Additionally, fissures in certain cases can become more painful with friction during sexual intercourse and may also serve as entry points for infections.

Is Penile-Dermatitis Contagious?

According to this article, most of the time, penile-dermatitis is not contagious, as it is not caused by viruses or bacteria. The explanation is that it is not triggered by viral or bacterial agents.

Symptoms of Contact Penile-Dermatitis

Common symptoms of penile-dermatitis include:

  • Sensitivity to touch;
  • Itching;
  • Redness;
  • Scaling;
  • Blisters or sores.

Causes of Penile Skin Lesions

Various factors can trigger penile skin lesions. Check out:

  1. Skin diseases: allergic or irritant contact dermatitis, balanitis, psoriasis, carcinoma in situ, squamous cell carcinoma.
  2. Sexually transmitted infections: genital herpes, syphilis, chancroid, inguinal granuloma.
  3. Infectious diseases: herpes zoster, tuberculosis, lymphogranuloma venereum.

Recommended Treatments for Penile-Dermatitis

Treatments vary according to the causes of penile irritation and the severity of symptoms. Check them out:

1. Contact Dermatitis

  • Identify irritant substances and avoid products containing them;
  • Oral antihistamines to control itching;
  • Low-potency corticosteroid creams or ointments for inflammation.

2. Eczema on the Penis

  • Corticosteroid creams to manage inflammation;
  • Topical immunomodulators, which affect the immune system, prescribed in severe cases;
  • Neutral moisturizers without alcohol or fragrances.

Daily Care to Prevent Penile-Dermatitis

Learn how to prevent the causes of penile irritation:

  1. Perform penis hygiene daily during bathing, using products recommended for sensitive penis skin, such as mild soaps;
  2. Dry well after bathing to avoid moisture in the intimate area;
  3. Choose cotton underwear to let the skin breathe;
  4. Use condoms and lubricants free of allergenic substances;
  5. Avoid excessive use of antibacterial soaps to maintain the skin’s natural defenses;
  6. A healthy diet to strengthen the immune system;
  7. Reduce stress, as it may worsen symptoms of eczema on the penis.
