Urological surgeries are indicated for diseases of the male reproductive system and the urinary tract. We will discuss the 8 main urological procedures and their indications, including the placement of a prosthesis, recommended for cases of severe penile curvature. Check them out.
Urological surgeries treat diseases of the male reproductive system and the urinary system. Specifically in men, they are related to the testicles, prostate, and penis.
Women can also undergo urological procedures when they have problems with the bladder, kidneys, ureters, and urethra, which are organs of the urinary tract.
Today we will explain the 8 main urological surgeries, their indications, and results.
8 Main Urological Surgeries
Some of the most well-known procedures are vasectomy and postectomy. However, urology encompasses other surgeries, as detailed below.
1. Vasectomy
Vasectomy is the male sterilization surgery. The urologist makes a small incision in the scrotal sac to block the flow of sperm.
For 60 days after the surgery, men must use condoms because some sperm may still be alive.
If regret or other reasons arise, it is possible to reverse the vasectomy. The shorter the time between sterilization and reversal, the greater the chance of regaining the ability to conceive.
2. Radical Prostatectomy
Indicated for men diagnosed with prostate cancer, radical prostatectomy is the removal of the prostate, the gland that produces semen.
The procedure may also involve removing the seminal vesicles, two glands located on either side of the prostate. They store and produce seminal fluid, which protects sperm during its journey through the female reproductive system.
Radical prostatectomy is a robotic surgery, meaning it is performed with the assistance of a robot that enhances the surgeon’s view and makes the procedure minimally invasive and, consequently, safer.
3. Extracorporeal Lithotripsy
Extracorporeal lithotripsy is a non-invasive procedure used to fragment kidney stones. Here’s how it works: the doctor uses a device called a lithotriptor, which sends shock waves to the stones, breaking them into smaller pieces that are then eliminated through the urine.
Anesthesia is not required, but the doctor may administer medication if necessary. The procedure lasts from 30 minutes to 1 hour, and the number of sessions varies depending on the size of the stones.
The procedure is more successful in children and is the first treatment option for them. As for contraindications, extracorporeal lithotripsy is not recommended in cases of:
- stones larger than 2 cm;
- stones located in the lower part of the kidneys;
- people on anticoagulant medications;
- pregnancy;
- significant urinary tract obstruction.

4. Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the removal of part of the prostate tissue obstructing the urethra, preventing complete urination. It is a minimally invasive procedure performed with a resectoscope, a device that uses high-frequency electrical current.
TURP is indicated for non-cancerous prostate enlargement, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, when medication has not been effective.
TURP has an 80 to 90% success rate in relieving urinary symptoms common to prostate enlargement, such as difficulty initiating urination, incomplete bladder emptying, increased urinary frequency, reduced urinary stream strength and volume, and urinary infections.
5. Postectomy
Postectomy, commonly known as “circumcision,” is one of the most common urological surgeries and involves removing the foreskin, the skin covering the glans.
Circumcision is indicated when the glans cannot be fully exposed, which makes it difficult to clean the penis, causes pain, difficulty urinating, and frequent urinary infections.
The procedure is simple and can be performed at any age. The patient receives local or general anesthesia if they are a child. The excess skin is removed with a subcoronal incision, and the cut is closed with sutures or surgical adhesive.
6. Varicocele Surgery
Varicocele is the excessive dilation of the testicular veins due to malformation or the absence of valves in the veins in the scrotum. This condition affects blood flow in the spermatic cord, which is linked to male fertility.
Pain in the left testicle, especially at the end of the day or after exertion, is the primary symptom.
Varicocele surgery is indicated in grades II and III, stages that can cause male infertility. The procedure is simple and involves tying off the varicose veins to direct blood flow to healthy veins.
After the intervention, there is a possibility of improvement in the quality of life and in the quality and quantity of sperm.
7. Penile Prosthesis Implant with Egydio Technique
The penile prosthesis implant is commonly recommended for Peyronie’s disease, an abnormal curvature of the penis.
The Egydio Technique, employed since 1998 with patents in the United States and Europe, is based on geometric principles to lengthen and restore the penis’s diameter and size. The procedure can help restore the size to the maximum limit of the nerves, blood vessels, and urethra.
Men with penile curvature who undergo the Egydio Technique may regain the vertical rigidity necessary for penetration and can resume sexual activity 45 to 60 days after the procedure.
