Studies show that a small penis, in relation to the Brazilian average, measures less than 13.58 cm, whether due to congenital issues or acquired over a lifetime. Find out when to worry.

The average penis size in Brazil varies according to different studies and measurement methodologies.

A 2015 study published in the Brazilian Journal of Urology (Study of the Penile Length in Adult Brazilian Men) compared the erect penis size in 2,770 men and concluded that the average erect length was 13.58 centimeters – but with considerable variation among participants.

The Brazilian average is slightly higher than the global average penis size.

A study also published in 2015 in the British Journal of Urology International (Am I Normal? A Systematic Review and Construction of Nomograms for Flaccid and Erect Penis Length and Circumference in up to 15,521 Men), conducted with more than 15,000 men, found an average erect penis length of approximately 13.24 centimeters – 30 millimeters less than Brazilians.

It is worth mentioning that penis development occurs during puberty, between the ages of 9 and 14. However, growth can continue until the age of 18, or even slightly later, when it reaches its maximum size.

What size is considered a small penis?

Among teenagers aged 13 to 17, the expected size is 9 to 14 centimeters or more when erect. After 18, the penis normally ranges from 12 to 16 centimeters in an erect state.

A penis that is shorter than expected for the age range can be considered a small penis.

Related causes

When the penis does not reach the expected development for the age, the patient presents micropenis, a condition of isolated cause or associated with congenital anomalies.

A penis can be small due to:

  • hormonal disorders during fetal development that affected the development of the male genital organs;
  • genetic conditions such as Klinefelter syndrome, Noonan syndrome, and Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome;
  • exposure to certain drugs, toxins, or medications during pregnancy;
  • environmental factors or unknowns contributing to the unexpected development of the penis.
Micropenis

Micropenis is a type of micropenis. In this case, the erect member is smaller than 7 centimeters in adults.

Micropenis presents a size smaller than expected, whether in length or circumference, even after full development in adulthood.

Conditions that cause loss of penis size

A small penis can also be caused by conditions that a man develops over his lifetime. See:

Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s Disease involves the development of fibrosis in the tunica albuginea, inside the penis, leading the affected segment to a lack of elasticity. As a result, there is a curvature when the penis is erect.

Due to the curvature, it is possible to notice that the penis loses size and can also thin out. Therefore, the man ends up with a small penis, smaller than the original size, before being affected by fibrosis.

Fractures

When a penile fracture occurs, there is a rupture of the tunica albuginea, which can lead to the formation of fibrosis in the tissue.

If healing does not occur correctly or even if the healing process results in fibrosis, the man can develop symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease, such as loss of penile size.

Fibrosis in the corpora cavernosa

When fibrosis affects the corpora cavernosa, in addition to causing symptoms associated with Peyronie’s Disease (curvature, thinning, and reduction of penis size), they can also lead to erectile dysfunction.

This is because, in this case, the fibrosis reaches the “sponge” of the penis, a deeper tissue, essential for the vascularization that leads to erection.

Penile prosthesis removal

The removal of the penile prosthesis in itself does not cause a reduction in penis size.

What happens is that the prosthesis gives vertical rigidity to the member so that, during sexual intercourse, the man can penetrate and execute movements without bending the member.

When the prosthesis is removed, if the patient does not have quality erections, he will be more prone to bends at the time H, which generate microtraumas that favor penile fibrosis and, consequently, Peyronie.

Does a small penis affect sexual satisfaction of the partner?

The fact that a man has a small penis, below average size, contrary to what he thinks, does not have significant impacts on the partner’s satisfaction at the time H.

In fact, there are many personal preferences and individual experiences for sexual satisfaction that do not depend on the size of the member.

Penetration is a part of sexual intercourse. Foreplay, kissing, caresses, emotional connection, and communication should also be valued.

Moreover, there are many sexual positions to enhance pleasure for couples, regardless of penis size.

Is it possible to increase penis size?

Yes, it is possible to increase penis size, but this type of treatment is not widely recommended.

A treatment aimed at increasing penis size, in general, is recommended when the patient is diagnosed with a condition that causes his penis to be smaller than expected, with tests proving that there is a positive prognosis for the case.

One of the possible treatments is for men with Peyronie’s Disease. In this case, they should undergo penile reconstruction.

Penile reconstruction surgery allows for the elongation of tissues up to the nerve limits, from small geometrically calculated cuts in the tunica albugínea. Thus, it is possible to treat curvature, thinning, and also loss of penile size.

Is using a vacuum pump safe?

The use of a vacuum pump can only be considered safe when indicated and guided by a health professional.

Generally, they are more used in cases of men with erectile dysfunction, as the device creates a vacuum around the penis, causing more blood to be directed to the genital region, providing an erection.

In some cases, it can also be indicated after penile surgeries to favor and accelerate rehabilitation.

When to worry about penis size

Physiologically speaking, a man should worry about penis size when it causes impairments to sexual life, such as erectile dysfunction, difficulty in achieving orgasm, or satisfying the partner.

If a man constantly feels inadequate or dissatisfied with the size of his member, despite not having a small penis or any other deformity, it may be a psychological condition called genital dysmorphia, which requires professional intervention.

However, it is important to keep in mind that the importance attached to penis size is influenced by a series of factors, including culture, media, and individual experiences, and that there are unrealistic ideals of virility that you do not need to achieve.

Sexual health goes far beyond penile size. However, if you notice that your penis has become smaller, it is necessary to seek medical help, as it may be a case of Peyronie. Contact us to learn more.
