What is the treatment indicated for congenital curvature?

Congenital curvature, also called the curvature of the young, is one where the man is born with some bend in the penis, caused by the difference in elasticity of the penile tissues during fetal formation.

Diagnosis should be made as soon as possible, preferably still in adolescence, so that the young person can live with the curvature in a healthy way and avoid worsening the condition to Peyronie’s Disease.

When necessary, the treatment for congenital penile curvature consists of surgery.

What is the recommended treatment for cases of acquired curvature?

In acquired curvature, or Peyronie’s Disease, the deformity occurs due to the formation of fibrosis, which alters the elasticity of a portion of the penile tissues, causing the member to become bent, reduced, and/or narrowed.

The treatment for acquired penile curvature depends on the phase in which the fibrosis is found. Generally, the earlier the patient seeks help, the more treatment alternatives are available.

Early Stage

When diagnosed early, Peyronie’s can be treated without surgery. In the inflammatory phase, usually, the curvature is still mild and does not cause difficulties for penetration. It is possible to try a treatment with oral or injectable medications, aimed at minimizing the fibrosis. Penile physiotherapy may also be advised to avoid retraction.

Chronic Phase

For patients who already have a stabilized curvature for at least three months, in a severe degree and associated with erectile dysfunction, the most indicated treatment for penile curvature is usually surgical.

In some cases, if the curvature is stabilized at a mild degree and there is no severe impairment of erection, it is possible to treat the condition with medications for erectile dysfunction. They will provide better pressurization to the penis, allowing penetration.
